Joanna Young left Egypt to begin a master’s degree at the University of Alaska Fairbanks – and now she’s off an Antarctic expedition! Young, who studies glacier loss, was selected from 250 applicants to be part of a program called Homeward Bound. Over three weeks, she and 75 other women will journey through the Southern Ocean, stopping at points along the Antarctic Peninsula. They will learn about the Antarctic region and participate in leadership training, with filmed lectures from conservationist Jane Goodall and oceanographer Sylvia Earle. The Alaska Climate Science Center is co-funding Young’s participation in the program.
